Excerpt/Spotlight: Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold by Iain Reading

Hey guys! So back in April, I went to FanExpo Vancouver which was AMAZING and while I was there I met an author by the name of Iain Reading, who wrote adventure novels about a girl detective! I was intrigued and grabbed his card and then being me, lost his card. But then a couple of months later I was contacted, asking if I'd like to do a feature of his book! So of course I said yes, as I love supporting Canadian books and authors! So read on if you want to find out more about this awesome sounding adventure series!

Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold is the thrilling first installment in a new young adult series of adventure mystery stories by Iain Reading. This first book of the Kitty Hawk Flying Detective Agency Series introduces Kitty Hawk, an intrepid teenage pilot with her own De Havilland Beaver seaplane and a nose for mystery and intrigue. A cross between Amelia Earhart, Nancy Drew and Pippi Longstocking, Kitty is a quirky young heroine with boundless curiosity and a knack for getting herself into all kinds of precarious situations.

After leaving her home in the western Canadian fishing village of Tofino to spend the summer in Alaska studying humpback whales, Kitty finds herself caught up in an unforgettable adventure involving stolen gold, devious criminals, ghostly shipwrecks, and bone-chilling curses. Kitty's adventure begins with the lingering mystery of a sunken ship called the Clara Nevada. As the plot continues to unfold, this spirited story will have readers anxiously following every twist and turn as they are swept along through the history of the Klondike Gold Rush to a suspenseful final climatic chase across the rugged terrain of Canada's Yukon.

Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold is a perfect book to fire the imagination of readers of all ages. Filled with fascinating and highly Google-able locations and history this book will inspire anyone to learn and experience more for themselves.

Prologue
Back Where The Entire Adventure Began
As soon as the engine began to sputter, I knew that I was in real trouble. Up until then, I had somehow managed to convince myself that there was just something wrong with the fuel gauges. After all, how could I possibly have burnt through my remaining fuel as quickly as the gauges seemed to indicate? It simply wasn't possible. But with the engine choking and gasping, clinging to life on the last fumes of aviation fuel, it was clear that when the fuel gauges read, "Empty," they weren't kidding around.
The lightning strike that took out my radio and direction-finding gear hadn't worried me all that much. (Okay, I admit it worried me a little bit.) It wasn't the first time that this had happened to me, and besides, I still had my compasses to direct me to where I was going. But I did get a little bit concerned when I found nothing but open ocean as far my eyes could see at precisely the location where I fully expected to find tiny Howland Island—and its supply of fuel for the next leg of my journey—waiting for me. The rapidly descending needles on my fuel gauges made me even more nervous as I continued to scout for the island, but only when the engine began to die did I realize that I really had a serious problem on my hands.
The mystery of the disappearing fuel.
The enigma of the missing island.
The conundrum of what do I do now?
"Exactly," the little voice inside my head said to me in one of those annoying 'I-told-you-so' kind of voices. "What do you do now?"
"First, I am going to stay calm," I replied. "And think this through."
"You'd better think fast," the little voice said, and I could almost hear it tapping on the face of a tiny wristwatch somewhere up there in my psyche. "If you want to make it to your twentieth birthday, that is.  Don't forget that you're almost out of fuel."
"Thanks a lot," I replied. "You're a big help."
Easing forward with the control wheel I pushed my trusty De Havilland Beaver into a nosedive. Residual fuel from the custom-made fuel tanks at the back of the passenger cabin dutifully followed the laws of gravity and spilled forward, accumulating at the front and allowing the fuel pumps to transfer the last remaining drops of fuel into the main forward belly tank. This maneuver breathed life back into the engine and bought me a few more precious minutes to ponder my situation.
"Mayday, mayday, mayday," I said, keying my radio transmitter as I leveled my flight path out again. "This is aircraft Charlie Foxtrot Kilo Tango Yankee, calling any ground station or vessel hearing this message, over."
I keyed the mic off and listened intently for a reply. Any reply. Please? But there was nothing. There was barely even static. My radio was definitely fried.
It was hard to believe that it would all come down to this. After the months of preparation and training. After all the adventures that I'd had, the friends I'd made, the beauty I'd experienced, the differences and similarities I'd discovered from one culture to the next and from one human being to the next. All of this in the course of my epic flight around the entire world.
Or I should say, "my epic flight almost around the entire world," in light of my current situation.
And the irony of it was absolutely incredible. Three-quarters of a century earlier the most famous female pilot of them all had disappeared over this exact same endless patch of Pacific Ocean on her own quest to circle the globe. And she had disappeared while searching for precisely the same island that was also eluding me as I scanned the horizon with increasing desperation.
"Okay," I thought to myself. "Just be cool and take this one step at a time to think the situation through." I closed my eyes and focused on my breathing, slowing it down and reining in the impulse to panic. Inside my head, I quickly and methodically replayed every flight that I'd ever flown. Every emergency I'd ever faced. Every grain of experience that I had accumulated along the long road that had led me to this very moment. Somewhere in there was a detail that was the solution to my current predicament. I was sure of it. And all I had to do was find it.
Maybe the answer to my current situation lay somewhere among the ancient temples of Angkor in Cambodia? Or in the steamy jungles of east Africa? Or inside the towering pyramids of Giza? Or among the soaring minarets of Sarajevo? Or on the emerald rolling hills and cliffs of western Ireland? Or on the harsh and rocky lava fields of Iceland?
Wherever the answer was, it was going to have to materialize quickly, or another female pilot (me) would run the risk of being as well-known throughout the world as Amelia Earhart. And for exactly the same reason.
"It's been a good run at least," the little voice inside my head observed, turning oddly philosophical as the fuel supplies ran critically low. "You've had more experiences on this journey around the world than some people do in their entire lifetime."
"That's it!" I thought.
Maybe the answer to all this lies even further back in time? All the way back to the summer that had inspired me to undertake this epic journey in the first place. All the way back to where North America meets the Pacific Ocean—the islands and glaciers and whales of Alaska.
All the way back to where this entire adventure began.

When rockstars come to town, crazy things can happen...

This project started as an idea for a romance series following a band. The original concept was to have five books on the band, Chasing Cross, and each book would feature a member of the band. Well, thanks to the readers support of the Brothers of Rock books, I have officially gotten details worked out for five more books! Those books won’t follow Chasing Cross but a new band. It’s been so fun and exciting writing these novels. They can be read as stand alone books but they’re best enjoyed in order as some of the plots are connected book to book.

Here’s the background on each of the books featuring Chasing Cross along with an excerpt from the newest Brothers of Rock book, Bitter Farewell (Chasing Cross #3) -

In the first book of the series – All Access – it introduces the band and introduces leader singer, Johnnie. He meets a woman who doesn’t know who he is and they fall for each other. The story is flirty and fun with the undertones of what it’s like to be a successful rockstar. Johnnie is sexy and rich, but he faces a lot of troubles. And with Jess, he realizes anything is possible.

With the second book – Broken Sound – Davey faces a real situation. A woman shows up at his hotel room with a baby claiming he’s the father. The flirty and fun feeling from All Access is quickly shaken away here. The book is deep as Davey tries to decide what the right to do is… and on top of that, he falls for a woman who isn’t the mother of the baby. There’s plenty of twists and turns in the book, including an attempted murder!

The release of Bitter Farewell brings Danny’s journey back home after he and Johnnie’s father dies. (Johnnie and Danny are blood brothers.) While Johnnie is able to make peace quick and the band is eager to get back to getting ready for their tour and recording, Danny can’t let it go. When he left town, he left a woman behind. And fate steps in, bringing them back together. This romance book explores love through heartache and proves the true power of time.

The fourth book will follow bassist, Chris, as he goes back in time to follow through on a promise he made when he – and Chasing Cross – were still young. And finally, the end Chasing Cross’s set of books, drummer Rick will face a decision that can – and will – change the direction of the entire band. Both those books will be released before the end of 2013!

Excerpt from Bitter Farewell (Brothers of Rock #3):

(1)

The strap was too long, the cloth frayed and ragged and Danny was too afraid to move it for fear of the strap completely breaking. The strings were like pieces of barbed wire; there wasn’t enough money to buy new strings... not for a ‘damn guitar’ as his father put it all the time. There wasn’t enough electricity either. Danny could plug the guitar into his amp, but he could never plug the amp in. Unless his father was working. But he’d have to get up killer early to play then...
“Dad... did you hear?”
Danny looked up from the guitar... he had to look up to from the guitar because he couldn’t play the chords without looking. Not like Johnnie. Johnnie learned how to play chords without looking. It was seriously cool.
Danny saw that his father wasn’t standing in the doorway anymore.
He had been there a second ago.
Danny put the guitar down and walked to the doorway. He heard the shower running.
‘Dad must have had a long day...’
That’s it, Danny told himself.
His father walked away a lot.
But he worked hard.
That mattered, right?
Danny looked back to the bed and knew he had about two minutes to plug the amp in and turn it on. There really wasn’t anything quite like the sound of his guitar turned on... and it certainly helped with the sting of loneliness.
“Dude, you ready?”
Danny took his eyes off the pearl diamond inlay neck on his guitar and looked up at Rick standing, twirling drumsticks.
“Yeah,” Danny whispered.
“Are you sure? You look like hell.”
“I’m good, how about you?”
Rick threw both sticks in the air and caught them without looking. He stuck them - tip down - into his front pocket. He outstretched his arms and smiled.
“I feel alive, my friend, alive.”
“Good. How’s the arm feeling?”
“Perfect.”
Rick held up his cast and tapped it. He was still weeks away from getting the cast removed at which point he could start practicing drums. Of course Rick insisted the second the cast came off he’d start playing shows. Doctors tried to explain to Rick the time it may take to get used to playing, not to mention the risk of aggravating anything in his arm, but he insisted. Johnnie had already promised Rick that once the time came to play again, he would. He’d start slow, two songs a night and add more each time.
“I still can’t believe you’re doing the show,” Rick said. “It’s... you don’t have to...”
“I do,” Danny said. He looked back to the guitar. He fingered a ‘C’ chord but didn’t strum it. He thought about being a kid, sitting on his bed, struggling to finger the chord. It was so natural now, something he could do in his sleep, without thinking.
“How are we feeling tonight?” another voice chimed in.
It was Peter’s voice.
“Ready to rock,” Danny said, knowing he sounded monotone.
“How’s the arm feeling?” Peter asked, gripping Rick’s shoulder.
“Good to go.”
“Yeah, right,” Peter said. “Dr. Beretti is pissed you told him you planned on opening the next leg of the tour playing a full set... he said if you overdo it, you’ll end up needing surgery...”
“I don’t care,” Rick said. “I’m playing.”
Peter looked at Danny.  Danny just blinked. Hiding emotion was pointless at the moment.
“Danny... why don’t I get Johnnie?”
“That’s cool,” Danny said.
Peter tugged on Rick’s shirt and they both left.
Danny let out a sigh.
He hated this, right now. The moment when everyone looked at him and felt pity.  Their eyes showed it, their kind voices proved it, and no matter what Danny did or said, the truth was present.
His father was dead.
Maybe it shouldn’t have hit him so hard, considering the seemingly always off relationship he had with ‘Big John’ as everyone called him. But it mattered, right? It was his father. Somewhere in Danny’s mind he believed that someday things would matter. That after this tour, he’d head home and maybe have that moment with his father. The one where his father would pull out a shoebox and show Danny he’d been collecting pictures and articles of Chasing Cross all these years...
“Little bro, what’s going on?”
Danny looked at Johnnie and swallowed. “I’m just waiting for the call... to take the stage...”
“You know, you don’t have to do this. It’s just a benefit show. It’s more about the name of the band being online and associated with the cause... and the donation we made.”
“No, I have to play this one,” Danny said. He gripped the neck of his guitar and squeezed tight.
The guitar was his life. His heart, his mind, his soul. His purpose, always and forever. From the second he heard Johnnie drum a horrible sounding ‘G’ chord, Danny knew he wanted to play guitar. It was that simple. A dream found, a dream chased, and a dream lived.
Johnnie walked into the room and shut the door. He crouched down in front of Danny, much like he did when they were kids and the house got too loud... or too violent. He took Danny’s face in his strong, brotherly hands and smiled.
“Don’t be a stubborn ass about this.”
“I’m not, Johnnie, I swear.”
As he looked into his only brother’s eyes, Danny felt his own eyes fill with tears. He swore he wouldn’t cry, not now at least, but looking at Johnnie brought it all back. And there wasn’t a single regret. Because the path they walked, as brothers on stage and brothers in life, was the best damn journey any man could have ever had.
“You know, when Peter called me last night about this show...”
“I know,” Danny said. “You told him I would hate you if you said no.”
“That’s right. I know you, brother, I know how it all works.”
“We’re flying out in the morning,” Danny said. “This is our last show for a little while.”
“I know,” Johnnie said. “Let’s give them a hell of a show...”  Johnnie pointed up.  “Him too.”
Danny half smiled. The relationship with their father and Johnnie was so much different than with Danny. Johnnie took everything on the chin and in stride, perhaps trying to become the real man of the house. And how could that not happen? Johnnie took care of everything and everyone. He was there to raise Danny. He was there to console their mother, Barbara, who passed away of cancer a year after Chasing Cross broke out and became huge. He changed light bulbs. He killed spiders. He did math homework, even when Danny tapped his pencil on the table, pretending he was playing drums, not giving a damn about math.
“I’m sorry about this,” Johnnie said.
Danny closed his eyes and felt tears trickle down his cheeks. “Me too. I don’t know why I’m even crying right now.”
“Danny, he was our father. Our blood. He created us... it’s okay to cry.”
“I know,” Danny whispered. “Can I... can I have a minute?”
“Sure thing.”
Johnnie leaned forward and kissed Danny’s forehead. Danny smiled as another tear fell down his cheek. He knew that life would settle and be okay, as long as he had Johnnie.
And Chasing Cross.

Blitz: Surface by Tiffany Duane

Bound to the water bound to land, a Siren’s soul will never be safe on either side of the ocean’s surface. Hidden beneath the rolling waves lies the secret to Theia’s past and as she unveils each haunting truth, she realizes the last seventeen years of her life have been a lie. Now, drawn into a mysterious new world and with nowhere to turn, Theia must place her trust in Luc, a beautiful boy who stops her heart with each dazzling smile, but even his unearthly charm can’t hide the truth—he has secrets— dark secrets binding him to his world—an underwater world where Theia will never belong—a world determined to destroy her soul.

Tiffany Daune doesn't get why people want to grow up or why anyone would ever stop eating candy. Her purse is filled with books, lip gloss and a few pieces of Lego bricks. She writes best with a dish of chocolate chips on hand and finds licorice makes a better straw than plastic.
She lives on an island and believes mermaids may be raiding her candy stash, thoughshe hasn't caught them, yet.
Surface is her first novel and pairs well with gummy sharks.

Excerpt:

Theia tucked her legs up in the chair, pulling as far away as she could from Luc. "Then why would you take the risk, by helping me?"
He avoided her question and instead jumped up and crossed the room, keeping his back to her.
He chose an etched decanter from the shelf, swirled it around, and then pulled the stopper. A pop resonated in the air followed by a sweet aroma, like fresh honeydew. Theia inhaled the fruity scent. She was amazed how strong the aroma was even from across the room, and with each breath she took it seemed to grow bolder.
Luc then picked two tarnished goblets and stood before her. He handed her one goblet and she took it in her hands. The metal was cool in her palm, but when he poured the sparkling green liquid from the decanter into her cup, her hands became warm.
"Drink it," he said, eyeing her carefully.
"I'll pass." She held the cup up for him to take.
"You'll need your strength." He nudged the cup back. "It will help heal your wounds."
Theia scanned her arms and legs; she looked like she had been spun in a blender. "What is it?" she asked, as she peered into the cup.
"It's seaweed. But not surface greens; that stuff's garbage, tainted by your air and all the pollutants on the surface."
Theia rolled her eyes. "You make it sound like I live in a wasteland."
She studied her drink. There was no way this was seaweed. At first she didn't notice any color, but, when she raised the cup up and the liquid moved, it shimmered to an emerald hue. She swirled the cup again and with each churn the cocktail deepened until it turned black, the scent increasing as well, overwhelming her with a desire to taste it on her lips. It was either delicious or deadly.
"You still haven't answered my question—if I'm so taboo, why bother?"
Again, Luc ignored her question, instead pouring a second goblet full of the liquid. He held his cup out to her.
"Let's drink to a new friendship." He grinned as he clapped the goblets together so they made a loud clang and then paused as he waited for her to take the first sip.
Theia held her breath, closed her eyes, and, as she raised the golden cup to her lips, prayed Luc was on her side.

Writers Workshop Tour: Excerpt!

Writers Workshop Excerpt

“Nothing fills a page faster than dialogue,” the writer said.

There it is, the blank page or screen, the intimidating and recurring challenge every writer must face. The temptation is to fill that page as quickly as possible, to advance the narrative however you can. Often the easiest way to do that, even for writers who are not masters of dialogue, is to get the characters talking. A few A few writers are even bold enough to begin novels or stories with a line of dialogue, something I don’t recommend unless you possess the skills of the early Robert A Heinlein, who began his story “Blowups Happen” with the suspenseful line: “Put down that wrench!” Orson Scott Card also opened his popular novel Ender’s Game with a piece of dialogue that immediately rouses the reader’s curiosity: “‘I’ve watched through his eyes, I’ve listened through his ears, and I tell you he’s the one.” Writing good and convincing dialogue is usually enough of a challenge without relying on it to hook a reader right at the beginning of one’s story. Writing dialogue, whatever the difficulties, is generally easier than, for example, crafting descriptive passages, offering insights into a character’s
psychology, creating vigorous and absorbing action scenes, or presenting necessary exposition in a graceful way.

Writers who harbor dreams of scriptwriting may be especially prone to fill pages with dialogue, but others also succumb, partly because dialogue is a shortcut and a very useful one. Sometimes a few well-chosen words of conversation can accomplish as much in a story as pages of description and exposition. There are also a fair number of readers who are more absorbed by stretches of repartee than by beautifully and poetically rendered descriptions. (Writers meet these people all the time; they’re the ones who tell you they skip all the dull parts, often meaning those carefully wrought passages that cost you so much effort.) Better just to cut to the chase, or in this case, drop in on the conversation.

The strength of dialogue—namely that it can be a useful shortcut—is also its weakness. Writers who rely too much on dialogue risk leaving too much out. The writer may hear the characters clearly and easily envision the scene, but that doesn’t mean that the reader will. (In a review of a novel some years back, Joanna Russ wrote that passages in that book seemed to be largely about names drinking cups of coffee, noticing the designs of ashtrays, or riffing on the furnishings in a room, the characters were so indistinguishable.) The beginning writer is likely to produce dialogue in which the reader will find it hard to tell one character from another. The useful shortcut can produce a story that is sketchy, in which too much has been left out

Belonging Tour: Excerpt + Giveaway!

I left everything I knew behind.
But it was worth it. He was worth it.
No one thought an ordinary girl like me would last two minutes living with the Amish, not even me. There are a lot more rules and a lot less freedom, and I miss my family and the life I once had. Worst of all, Noah and I aren't even allowed to see each other. Not until I've proven myself.
If I can find a way to make it work, we'll be NOAH & ROSE
together forever.
But not everybody believes this is where I belong.

About Karen Ann Hopkins
A native of New York State, Karen Ann Hopkins now lives with her family on a farm in northern Kentucky, where her neighbors in all directions are members of a strict Amish community. Her unique perspective became the inspiration for the story of star-crossed lovers Rose and Noah. When she’s not homeschooling her kids, giving riding lessons or tending to a menagerie of horses, goats, peacocks, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats, she is dreaming up her next romantic novel.

Excerpt from Belonging, A Wild Night, Amish Style
“Did you hear that?” Miranda whispered.
Dead silence filled the room after her words.  I craned my neck to listen for any sounds, turning my ear in the direction of the doorway that Suzanna had said led to the stairway.
“Was it coming from up there?” I pointed at the black opening in the wall.
Miranda shook her head, “Outside.”  She spoke so low that it was as if I were lip reading to understand her.
The four of us moved closer together until our arms were brushing.  Summer reached out taking my hand into her sweaty ones and held tightly.
I was not usually a scaredy-cat sort of person, but at that moment my heart was pounding madly against my chest.  The sudden dawning that here we were, four teenage girls out in the middle of the woods in a broken down old spook house, sent an adrenaline rush coursing through my veins.  My sharpened senses caught the scraping against the outside wall, followed by a wailing sound that sent the image of a cat having its heart carved out past my vision.
Instantly, our arms all tangled around each other and I could feel Summer shaking beside me.    Her face was hiding against my shoulder.
I was afraid, but I was also pissed off.  We were supposed to be having a fun girl’s night out, but instead we’d ended up in a Halloween sequel.  I was not going to let whatever was out there, ruin my evening—or kill any of us.
I disengaged from Summer about the same time the loud stomping could be heard on the front porch.  Quicker than I thought my fear frozen legs would carry me I had the long skinny board that was beside the fire in my hand and I was in the shadow of the doorway.
I didn’t have to wait more than a second when the door flung open to reveal three dark figures crashing into the room.  I wasn’t sure if the screaming was coming from the intruders or the girls, but either way it was too loud to think.  That’s when I swung the board as hard as I could manage.  The thud of hitting something solidly jolted my arm, causing some pain, but I didn’t care about that.  The human sob that followed my well placed blow brought me to my senses.
“Damn it. I’ve been attacked.  I think I’m bleeding.”
            The voice was mildly familiar.
“Oh, you poor dear,” Suzanna cooed to the psychopath, wrapping her arms around him as she led him to the fire.  Her voice changed to a shrill yell when she addressed me. “What are you, Rose, one of those Amazon women Summer’s always talking about?”
Everything happened rather fast at the point she said my name.  Before Suzanna had even finished her sentence, I was being swept up into a bone crushing embrace—by Noah.
I knew his arms, his chest, and his scent.
I squealed in delight as he picked me off the floor and swung me around, my face buried in his neck.  When he stopped, his mouth found mine and the urgency of the kiss left me breathless.  This was turning out to be a better night than I could have ever imagined.

Happy reading!

My Wolf's Bane Tour: Excerpt and Giveaway!

Different species. Mortal enemies. It'll never work, but they'll die trying.
Autumn Rossi thought she was a normal teenager. Suddenly, she can outrun every critter in the forest, making her wonder if she’s even human.

When the new guy at school, Zack de Luca, witnesses a questionable scene, he unfairly pins her as stuck-up. He acts like he hates her, yet he keeps bailing her out of trouble. Not only is Zack both insufferable and irresistible, he seems to sniff her anytime he gets close.

As passion flares between them, Autumn isn’t sure which is more dangerous: her psycho ex-boyfriend, or falling for Zack — who’s risking his life just by being near her.
Excerpt:

I tossed the makeup bag into my backpack, slung it over my shoulder and whipped open the door. Barreling out of the bathroom, I slammed into what felt like a walking boulder. I ricocheted off the human rock and my backpack hit the wall behind me, throwing me off balance and pitching me forward into the hard, linoleum tile.
My palms cushioned my fall, but I winced as pain spiked up my wrists. On all fours, I lifted my chin and peeked through my curtain of dark hair.
He wore a black tee that molded to his wide, muscular shoulders and jeans that fit over powerful legs. Wow. I’d thought my soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend was cute, but this guy…
“You okay?” the hottie asked in a sexy, gravelly voice, stretching a hand toward me. His hand wrapped around mine and effortlessly pulled me up, as if I weighed no more than my calculus book. Maybe it was the throbbing in my limbs or the warmth of his hands on my elbows. Or maybe it was his earthy scent invading my senses, but a wave of dizziness hit me and I tipped forward.
His hands shot to my hips to steady me. “Easy there.”
I stared into his deep, green eyes as my palms rested on his hard biceps for support. Lord, he smelled good, like the forest after rain.
My breath hitched.
